The United Democratic Party (UDP) has formally congratulated the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) following its back-to-back victories in the Kaiaf and Bantanjang Ward by-elections for the Mansakonko Area Council, held today.
In an official statement released by its Media & Communications Team, the UDP acknowledged the NPP’s success in both wards, where NPP candidates Omar Touray (Kaiaf) and Abdoulie Badjie (Bantanjang) emerged victorious, filling seats previously held or contested in a region long considered competitive.
“We extend our congratulations to the National People’s Party on their victory in the Kaiaf and Bantanjang Ward Councilor by-elections,” the statement read. “We commend the people of Kaiaf and Bantanjang for peacefully exercising their democratic right to vote and for their continued participation in strengthening local governance and democracy in The Gambia.”
The UDP described the elections as a healthy demonstration of the country’s democratic process, despite their competitive nature. The party emphasized its ongoing commitment to constructive political engagement, accountability, and policies that improve the welfare of all Gambians.
While conceding defeat, the opposition party struck a forward-looking tone, wishing the newly elected councilors success in their roles. “We wish the elected councilors well in the discharge of their responsibilities and urge them to serve their communities with integrity, transparency, and dedication to development,” the statement continued.
The UDP also signaled that it would reflect internally on the results while maintaining its focus on grassroots engagement. “The UDP will continue to engage with the electorate, reflect on the outcome of the elections, and work tirelessly in the interest of the Gambian people,” it affirmed.
The dual wins represent a notable boost for the NPP in the Lower River Region ahead of the 2026 presidential elections, particularly in wards where the UDP has historically enjoyed strong support. Today’s outcomes follow the vacancies created in Kaiaf by the tragic death of former NPP Councillor Hamat Ceesay in November 2025, and in Bantanjang due to related electoral circumstances.
The UDP’s gracious concession and call for unity underscore the maturity of Gambia’s multiparty democracy, even as both sides prepare for future electoral battles.
