The Gambia and the European Union on Wednesday reaffirmed their deepening strategic partnership during  Europe Day 2026 celebrations, moving beyond traditional donor-recipient ties to a relationship rooted in shared values, mutual interests, and joint responsibility for sustainable development.

The high-profile event, held at the Ocean Bay Resort in Cape Point, Bakau, brought together a distinguished gathering including cabinet ministers, National Assembly members, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, private sector representatives, and the European community in The Gambia.

Attendees celebrated not only Europe’s unity but also the growing bonds between Banjul and Brussels.

In his keynote address, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie, described the EU as one of The Gambia’s most reliable and consistent partners. He emphasised that bilateral cooperation has evolved significantly, now focusing on governance, human rights, rule of law, and sustainable development.

“The relationship between The Gambia and the EU has grown into a strategic partnership built on trust, shared values, and mutual interests,” Minister Njie said. “It goes far beyond a donor-recipient arrangement and continues to support The Gambia’s national priorities.”

Njie highlighted key areas of collaboration, including infrastructure development, trade, health, education, transitional justice, climate resilience, and youth empowerment. He singled out the Youth Empowerment Project as a notable success, particularly for its positive impact on women and young Gambians. The minister also praised EU support for legal migration pathways, labor mobility, return, and reintegration programs, calling for a balanced and humane approach to migration management.

At the continental level, Njie stressed the need for Africa and Europe to jointly tackle transnational challenges such as conflict prevention, violent extremism, human trafficking, and cyber threats. He concluded by congratulating the European Union and its member states on Europe Day, expressing gratitude for their enduring friendship and solidarity with The Gambia.

EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation, Immaculada Roca i Cortés, echoed the minister’s sentiments, underscoring the tangible results delivered through the partnership. She pointed to EU-backed initiatives in job creation, climate-smart agriculture, education, rural electrification, and improved access to clean water.

“Our partnership is built around shared values and aligned with The Gambia’s national development priorities,” Ambassador Roca i Cortés said.

“Cooperation extends across government institutions, civil society, and the private sector, delivering practical benefits to communities across the country.”

The ambassador thanked EU member states, development partners, and her team for their contributions to the growing relationship. She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to collaborating with The Gambia on pressing global issues, including insecurity, irregular migration, climate change, and economic pressures.

Both sides pledged to deepen further bilateral and multilateral cooperation in democracy, security, energy, education, and peacebuilding. The celebration ended on a note of optimism, with renewed calls for continued friendship, solidarity, and shared progress between the two partners.

The Europe Day 2026 event served as a powerful reminder of the strong and evolving ties between The Gambia and the European Union.

As both parties navigate complex regional and global challenges, their renewed commitment signals a forward-looking partnership aimed at delivering inclusive development and prosperity for Gambian citizens.
