After five years of dedicated research, The Journey of Alkamba/Kudang, a landmark documentary capturing the rich history, culture, and contributions of Niamina Kudang, will premiere on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Gambia Tourism & Hospitality Institute (GTHI) Hotel School in Kanifing.
The event will also serve as an inspiring Awards Night honoring individuals who have shaped the community’s heritage and impact, both locally and globally.
The project represents the culmination of a lifelong dream for Mr. Bora Ceesay, a native of Niamina Kudang and nephew of Niamina Dankunku Maribantang. What started in 2020 as a personal mission to preserve his village’s story has evolved into a comprehensive documentary, with an accompanying book nearing completion.
Together, they form the first authoritative historical record of Kudang—from its earliest settlers to its present-day multi-ethnic community known for living in harmony.
Ceesay was supported by Mr. Ebrima S. Sisay, elders from Kudang’s six clans, Mr. Sheriffo Darboe, families, and friends whose contributions are deeply acknowledged.
The documentary highlights Kudang’s agricultural potential, strategic location, economic opportunities, and enduring traditions. It celebrates “Londibuntung-ya” – the deep cultural spirit of learning – that has produced generations of accomplished scholars, professionals, and leaders across various fields.
Special emphasis is placed on the roles of youth and women, as well as the significant contributions of the Kudang diaspora. Many natives have served as independence heroes, led NGOs, held key positions in government institutions, and represented The Gambia in international bodies, including the United Nations.
The launch event is expected to draw ministers, officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Gambia Tourism Board, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Kudang and Dankunku natives, and guests from across The Gambia and abroad. Awards will be presented in multiple categories, including Education (Arabic/Islamic and Western), Agriculture, Culture and Tradition, Philanthropy, Social Impact and Community Leadership, Contributions to National and International Institutions, Youth and Women, Diaspora, and special recognitions.
The evening will begin with duas and prayers, followed by speeches, and culminate in vibrant cultural performances. Highlights include a performance by the King of Kora, Jaliba Kuyateh, alongside Kudang’s own Kankurang and Manyo traditional groups, Dankunku Maribantang “Mamo” cultural troupes, and other ensembles representing Gambia’s diverse tribes.
Organizers describe the occasion as more than a launch—it is a celebration of heritage, unity, and inspiration. The documentary and book are positioned as vital resources for academics, researchers, schools, universities, tourism stakeholders, government officials, development partners, and future generations eager to understand and preserve Gambian history.
This landmark event promises to honor the past, celebrate the present, and pave the way for a future rooted in pride and shared identity.
