Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, has accused the Gambian police of planning his arrest following the inauguration of donated street lights in Brikama. In a statement released late last night, Darboe claimed that “every development” in his region is met with “threats of police arrest and detention.”

Darboe described returning home from the street light ceremony to find his house surrounded by concerned youths alarmed by rumors of his imminent arrest by police aligned with President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP). “What are they arresting me for?” Darboe questioned, decrying what he called a pattern of arbitrary arrests. “What kind of a country have we become, where the police can jump and arrest anyone they like?”

The chairman condemned the alleged actions as indicative of a “police state” and urged Gambians to resist such practices, asserting that the country is “a country of laws.” Addressing President Barrow directly, Darboe vowed resilience, stating, “The more you and your surrogates try to bring me down, the more I rise.” He expressed confidence in divine protection, adding, “My Lord is my shepherd.”

The allegations have sparked concern among local residents amid ongoing tensions between local officials and the central government in The Gambia.
