In a shocking development, Ebrima Jarra, the renowned anchor of King FM’s Mandinka news, has been fired following a dispute with management over his call for salary increases for staff. The popular broadcaster confirmed his termination in an exclusive interview with TAT, expressing dismay at the abrupt end to his tenure, which he attributed to a straightforward request made during a staff meeting. The dismissal has sparked widespread attention, with Jarra now preparing to take legal action against the radio station.

Jarra, a household name across The Gambia for his engaging delivery on King FM’s widely followed Mandinka news program, revealed that the termination stemmed from a disagreement with the station’s manager over his advocacy for better pay. “Yes, it’s about a salary increment; that is the only reason,” Jarra told TAT. “The manager said he did not appreciate how I talked to him. Basically, that is the issue, and this is why he decided to terminate my services with King FM.”

The broadcaster expressed disappointment at what he called a “medieval” decision, noting that the issue could have been resolved amicably. Despite the setback, Jarra remained resolute, stating he has accepted the decision “wholeheartedly” and is ready to move forward. He has already taken steps toward legal recourse, having consulted his lawyer, Lamin J. Darboe. The pair has issued a formal demand to King FM’s management, giving them seven days to reconsider the termination. “Right now, we don’t want to talk much about the issue because the matter will be taken to court,” Jarra said. “If they fail to respond within seven days, we will take the matter to court.”

King FM’s Mandinka news, anchored by Jarra alongside Lamin Sanyang, is one of the station’s flagship programs, resonating with listeners nationwide. The broadcast is not only a staple on King FM but is also rebroadcast by other radio stations and widely shared across WhatsApp groups, cementing Jarra’s status as a prominent media figure. His sudden dismissal has left fans and colleagues reeling, with many expressing solidarity on social media and other platforms.

“I’m just grateful to the Gambian people for showing their solidarity with me in these trying times,” Jarra said, acknowledging the outpouring of support. He emphasized his commitment to resolving the issue, stating, “For now, we are waiting for King FM to reply within seven days, and if they fail to do so, we will go to court.” The broadcaster’s determination to seek justice has added a layer of anticipation to the unfolding saga, with many awaiting the station’s response.

The termination highlights broader concerns about working conditions and remuneration in The Gambia’s media industry, where journalists and broadcasters often face financial challenges despite their public influence. Jarra’s case could set a precedent for how such disputes are handled, particularly in prominent media outlets like King FM, which plays a significant role in shaping public discourse.

As the seven-day deadline approaches, all eyes are on King FM’s management and their next move. Will they reconsider their decision, or will the matter escalate to the courts? For now, Jarra remains optimistic, buoyed by the support of his listeners and his resolve to stand up for what he believes is right.
