Hon. Lamin Ceesay, the National Assembly Member for Kiang West Constituency, has issued a sharp warning to the government and security forces following investigative reports by The Republic exposing the controversial sale of properties belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh. In a fiery statement, Ceesay condemned alleged plans to target journalist Mustapha K. Darboe, the author of the reports, and vowed to protect him and the nation’s youth.
Ceesay directly addressed President Adama Barrow, as Commander-in-Chief and Chairman of the National Security Council, along with the Minister of Interior, Inspector General of Police, and Director of the National Intelligence Agency. “This warning goes to all of you,” he declared, accusing authorities of engaging in discussions to suppress Darboe’s reporting. He described Darboe as a “patriotic citizen” and a “great asset” to The Gambia, emphasizing that his safety is non-negotiable.
“Touch Mustapha, Touch Every Youth,” Ceesay proclaimed, signaling a rallying cry for the country’s youth and civil society to remain vigilant. He warned that any move against Darboe would provoke widespread resistance, with Ceesay pledging to lead protests if necessary. “I am prepared to be at the forefront of any gathering if the brother is touched,” he stated.
The lawmaker also referenced reliable intelligence suggesting government misconduct in the property sales, promising further exposure. He urged civil society and youth groups to stay alert and protect the nation’s young people. Ceesay noted that additional evidence is being gathered and expressed hope for an extraordinary parliamentary session to address a proposed motion by the majority leader regarding the issue.
The Republic’s reports have sparked outrage over the handling of Jammeh’s assets, which were seized following his ouster in 2017 after 22 years of authoritarian rule. Ceesay’s statement also alluded to a prior controversy involving Assistant Superintendent of Police Binta Njie, whom he defended for remarks about her ancestry, underscoring his broader concerns about government overreach.
“For the service of our nation, we remain,” Ceesay concluded, reaffirming his commitment to accountability and justice.
