The United Democratic Party (UDP) has categorically dismissed as false and malicious claims made by NPP senior official and Presidential Adviser Saihou Mballow that UDP Chairman Yankuba Darboe once stated Talib Bensouda could not lead the party because he is not Mandinka.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the UDP Media and Communications Team described Mballow’s remarks — made on Kerr Fatou’s “Political Kacha” program with Jarra — as “a deliberate attempt to malign the character of Yankuba Darboe and misrepresent the values of the United Democratic Party.”

“The UDP has consistently stood for inclusivity, national unity, and equal opportunity for all Gambians, irrespective of tribe, region, religion, or background,” the party said.

The UDP expressed concern over what it called a growing pattern of tribal rhetoric within the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). The statement referenced similar comments recently made by nominated National Assembly Member Maimuna Ceesay Darboe.

“These recurring statements point to a troubling pattern of political discourse rooted in division rather than substance,” the UDP noted.

The party accused the NPP of resorting to tribal narratives to distract from pressing national issues, particularly concerns surrounding the ongoing voter registration exercise.

“At a time when citizens are focused on safeguarding the integrity of the voter registration process, ensuring that only bona fide and legally qualified Gambians are registered, the NPP appears intent on creating distractions,” the statement read.

It further highlighted “reports and growing concerns about the issuance of questionable national documents to underage individuals and non-Gambians,” urging authorities to address these matters with “seriousness and transparency” rather than deflecting.

The UDP called on all Gambians to reject tribal politics and remain united in defence of democracy.

“The UDP remains committed to promoting peace, unity, and credible electoral processes that reflect the true will of the Gambian people,” the statement concluded.
