Kebba Van Sawaneh, the Head Coach of PSV Wellingara, is hopeful that his side will remain in the First Division League of the Gambia Football Federation despite occupying rock bottom position in the standings of the top-flight league.

The Wellingara base club secured their third win of the season following a narrow 1-0 victory over Team Rhino on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at the Bakau Mini Stadium. Midfielder Yankuba Ceesay’s second-half strike was enough for PSV to celebrate their win number 3 in 19 league matches.

PSV Wellingara is stuck at the bottom of the GFF League One table with 14 points so far, having lost 11 games, drawn five, and won three in 19 times of trials.

“It is a positive result that we badly needed because of the run that we have been on, which was not promising at all. It is also a positive result regarding the history and relationships between the two clubs. We share many things in common, which also motivated the players going into this game,” Sawaneh told TATSports in an exclusive interview.

“We are nowhere near where we want to be in the league standings or on the points tally we would have wanted to gather by now. But this has given us a good reference point to build on. For example, suppose we can beat and keep a clean sheet against a strong and informative team like Team Rhino, who are playing well. In that case, we can do it against any other team in our subsequent matches. We are not trying to be over-ambitious, but we will take it game by game,” he said.

PSV has 11 games remaining on the books to turn things around and avoid the avoidable. However, Coach Van believed surviving relegation in the upcoming games was possible.

“That is possible thirty-three (33) points to grab. Suppose we can provide a little consistency in winning matches. Then, hopefully, we can move away from the bottom of the table and avoid relegation. We have to play against teams ahead of us on the table standings, and those points are there for all of us. So we will go back and better prepare ourselves and start picking maximum points,” he expressed.
