The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has detained four officers following the death of Omar Badjie, who died during a police pursuit. The officers, identified as 1st Class Constable Sulayman Jarju, Police Constable Mamadi Jallow, Police Constable Ebrima Touray, and Police Constable Fa Sainey Cham, were arrested on September 28, 2025, and remain in custody pending an independent Coroner’s Inquest ordered by the state.
The GPF announced the development in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and justice. The officers, stationed in Jamburr, Kubariko, Lamin, and Banjulinding respectively, were directly involved in the incident leading to Badjie’s death. Authorities have not disclosed specific details of the pursuit, but the case has sparked public interest, prompting calls for accountability.
A postmortem examination was conducted by a pathologist in the presence of stakeholders to determine the cause of Badjie’s death. Following the examination, his body was released to his family for burial on October 1, 2025. The GPF has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and impartial, with further updates promised as the inquest progresses.
“The Gambia Police Force is committed to ensuring justice is served,” the GPF statement read. “Anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.” The independent Coroner’s Inquest is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Badjie’s death, addressing growing concerns about police conduct.
The case has drawn attention to police accountability in The Gambia, with the public closely monitoring developments. The GPF’s handling of the investigation and the forthcoming inquest will likely shape public trust in the force’s commitment to justice and transparency.
