DLEAG nabs man with 41 bundles of cannabis

The Gambia’s Drug Law Enforcement Agency, DLEAG, has arrested a man with 41 bundles of the illicit drug cannabis. The seizure was made Tuesday (26 October) morning near the Gambia College in Brikama in the West Coast Region, it announced in a press statement. 

The agency identified the man as Ebrima Sonko, a Gambian male, who was on his way to the Kombos from Foni. The accused was in a Mercedes Benz when he was arrested, and the drug was concealed in the booth of his car. It added that he was wearing a military camouflage trousers and cap and posing as a soldier.

“We take this opportunity to reiterate the call for non-serving members of the armed forces to desist from wearing military paraphernalia, including clothes, trousers, bags etc. The Gambia armed forces has on several occasions issued statements warning people to desist from selling, buying and or wearing military or military-like kits, materials and equipment.”
The agency said the man is in custody, and will be investigated and prosecuted for the drugs-related offence. “Subsequently, he will be handed over to The Gambia armed forces for appropriate action.”

After his arrest and imprisonment by the previous regime of President Yahya Jammeh in 2014, he relocated to Dakar, Senegal, where he continues to work as a freelance journalist for various local and international media organizations, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, VOA, and ZDF TV in Germany. He is also a co-founder of the Banjul-based Media Center for Research and Development, an institution dedicated to research and development initiatives. As a journalist and communication expert dedicated to supporting the Gambia's transitional process, Mr. Sainey M.K. Marenah plays a significant role in developing a media and communications platform aimed at enhancing civic participation and raising awareness of the requirements for transitional governance. His efforts contribute to the country's ongoing movement toward democratization. In addition to his work in Gambia, Mr. Marenah has traveled extensively across Europe, Africa, and the United States as a professional journalist and has participated in various local and international media training programs.
