ActionAid International, The Gambia, has expressed deep concern over the arrest and ongoing detention of members of the pressure group Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), urging the government to prioritize dialogue and immediately release the detained young people.
In a strongly worded press statement issued today, the human rights and social justice organization stressed that a vibrant democracy requires citizens, especially young people, to express their views freely and engage peacefully on issues affecting their lives. The group highlighted freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and civic participation as fundamental rights that must be protected.
“Responses to civic engagement, especially those involving young people, should prioritize dialogue, understanding, and de-escalation rather than measures that risk increasing tensions or eroding public trust,” the statement read.
ActionAid acknowledged the need to uphold the rule of law and maintain public order. It called on all citizens, particularly the youth, to exercise their rights responsibly and within legal bounds. However, it urged state security forces, including the police, to respond with restraint, professionalism, and full respect for democratic principles.
The organization emphasized that young people are central to national development and democratic progress. Their concerns and aspirations, it said, deserve meaningful attention through inclusive engagement rather than confrontation. ActionAid specifically called on the Gambian authorities to open channels of dialogue with the concerned parties and work towards a peaceful resolution.
“We further call for the release of the detained young people while due process and constructive engagement continue,” the statement added.
The appeal comes against the backdrop of recent incidents involving young protesters and security authorities. ActionAid warned that heavy-handed responses could undermine public trust and reverse gains made during The Gambia’s transitional justice process following years of authoritarian rule.
The organization concluded by stressing that sustainable peace and national cohesion depend on mutual respect, open dialogue, and adherence to the democratic values enshrined in the Gambian Constitution. It urged all stakeholders to recommit to human rights, justice, accountability, and active citizen participation.
