Weekend of Campaigning, as Presidential Candidates seek Votes

The six candidates in the Dec 4 presidential election were this weekend all out in different parts of the country, soliciting for votes.

Intense campaigning commenced last week, after the Independent Electoral Commission, IEC, announced 9 November to 2 December, 2021 as the official campaign period for the election.

Among the candidates is the incumbent, President Adama Barrow, who is seeking re-election for a second five-year term.

Barrow was in Upper River Region (URR) holding meetings in Gambisara and Basse.
Barrow earlier held rallies in the North Bank Region before heading to the URR.

Adama Barrow of the National People’s Party (NPP) is the candidate of an alliance of many political parties, and received the endorsement of several independent aspirants after their nomination was rejected by the national elections commission.

The weekend campaign highlights include PDOIS candidate Halifa Sallah spots meetings in various localities in the Kanifing Municipality and the West Coast Region, including the coastal towns of Gunjur, Sanyang and Kartong.

Candidate Sallah also held spot meetings in Brusubi, Sukuta, Old Yundum, Banjulinding, Kombo Kerewana and Lamin.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) launched its campaigning on 13 November, and started in the North Bank Region, where it’s candidate, Ousainou Darboe, was in the North Bank Region canvassing for votes.

Darboe held campaign rallies in Barra, Fass Njga Choi and Aljamdu on Saturday.

Darboe is accompanied by Bakary Bunja Darboe, a veteran politician and leader of The Gambia for All (GFA) party, which has endorsed the UDP candidate.

They were scheduled to hold meetings in Bantanding Wollof, Kerewan, Salikeni and Farafenni.

The candidate of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mamma Kandeh, who was endorsed by the APRC No-to-Alliance movement, was today also endorsed by the Gambia Action party (GAP).

This was before heading for meetings in the North Bank Region settlements of Ndungu Kebbeh, Kerr Biram, Chissy Majaw and Farafenni.

The Independent Candidate, Essa Mbye Faal, held meetings in Sare Bojo, Wellingara, Soutama Sireh, Soutoma Samba, Kanubeh and Alunhareh.

Ebrima Abdoulie Jammeh, candidate of the National Unity Party (NUP) was in his native Baddibu, where he held rallies in the settlements of Farafenni, Sabach Njayen, Sara Kunda, Kaur and Chamen.

Mr. Sainey M.K. Marenah is a prominent Gambian journalist and the founding editor of The Alkamba Times. He previously held the position of Head of Communications at the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) and served as a Communications and PR Consultant for The Gambia Pilot Program under Gamworks. Additionally, Mr. Marenah was the social media strategist and editor at Gambia Radio and Television Services and served as the Banjul Correspondent for Voice of America Radio. With a focus on human rights and developmental journalism, Mr. Marenah has established a significant presence in the Gambian media landscape, particularly in new media environments. His career began in 2008 as a junior reporter at The Point Newspaper, where he advanced to become Chief Correspondent. He later joined The Standard Newspaper in Banjul as Editorial Assistant and Head of News. Mr. Marenah is known for covering some of the most critical stories during the former and current administrations, including high-profile treason cases involving former military chiefs from 2009 to 2012. After his arrest and imprisonment by the previous regime of President Yahya Jammeh in 2014, he relocated to Dakar, Senegal, where he continues to work as a freelance journalist for various local and international media organizations, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, VOA, and ZDF TV in Germany. He is also a co-founder of the Banjul-based Media Center for Research and Development, an institution dedicated to research and development initiatives. As a journalist and communication expert dedicated to supporting the Gambia's transitional process, Mr. Sainey M.K. Marenah plays a significant role in developing a media and communications platform aimed at enhancing civic participation and raising awareness of the requirements for transitional governance. His efforts contribute to the country's ongoing movement toward democratization. In addition to his work in Gambia, Mr. Marenah has traveled extensively across Europe, Africa, and the United States as a professional journalist and has participated in various local and international media training programs. He is currently based in the United States.
