President Adama Barrow on Thursday officially inaugurated a 12.6-kilometer road network connecting Farato, Bojang Kunda, Bafuloto, Makumbaya and Lamin Babylon, completing Lot 5 of the EPC Nationwide Roads Project.

The new roads form part of the government’s ongoing nationwide infrastructure program aimed at improving mobility and supporting economic growth across The Gambia.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Barrow said the project would ease transportation, open new economic opportunities and accelerate development in the communities along the corridors.

He underscored the central role of road infrastructure in national development, noting that reliable roads connect residents to markets, essential services and business opportunities. The President described the project as particularly significant for the Greater Banjul Area, which continues to experience rapid population growth and rising economic activity that place increasing demands on existing infrastructure.

President Barrow reaffirmed that his administration has placed infrastructure development at the heart of its national agenda. He described the EPC Nationwide Roads Project as a strategic investment designed to improve mobility, facilitate commerce, and attract further investment. He said residents, businesses and other road users would benefit from smoother travel and better access to services.

The President stressed that government responsibility does not end with construction. He called for sustained maintenance, transparency and accountability to ensure value for public funds. He also urged residents to protect the roads, road reserves and drainage systems from activities that could cause damage or reduce their lifespan.

In addition, President Barrow appealed to motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians to observe road safety rules and show mutual respect while using the new routes. He thanked the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, the National Roads Authority, contractors, consultants, traditional leaders and community members for their collective efforts in delivering the project.

Addressing residents of the beneficiary communities, he encouraged them to take ownership of the infrastructure and use it responsibly. The roads, he said, represent an investment in their future and that of generations to come.

President Barrow subsequently declared the Farato–Bojang Kunda–Bafuloto–Makumbaya and Lamin Babylon roads officially inaugurated and open to the public. He expressed hope that the completed project would strengthen economic activities, improve living conditions, and contribute to the continued development of the Greater Banjul Area.
