Young Gambian medical practitioner, Dr. Fatoumatta Jaiteh, on March 8, became The Gambia’s first-ever woman to be admitted a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Dr. Jaiteh alongside Dr. Kajali Camara and Dr. Isaac Jabang were admitted after they sat and passed the MRCS exams.
Dr. Jaiteh was conferred the prestigious accolade on a day when women around the world were being celebrated for their remarkable achievements in various fields. Her medical journey started in 2006 after being enrolled at the University of The Gambia’s School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medicine and Surgery in 2014. Following her graduation, she started working at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. A surgeon in training, Dr. Jaiteh also attended a year-long fellowship in surgical oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. This year, she began a three-year-long fellowship in trauma and orthopedics at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Malawi.
