Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) has formally petitioned the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Chambers, demanding urgent action to address irregularities in the disposal of assets seized from former President Yahya Jammeh. The petition, filed under Section 25(1)(f) of the 1997 Constitution and the Access to Information Act, 2021, responds to The Republic’s investigative report, “The Assets of Gambia’s Former Dictator Go for a Song,” which exposed undervaluations, lack of transparency, and potential insider dealings in the asset sales.

The recovered assets, intended to symbolize justice and restitution for Gambians, were meant to rebuild public trust following Jammeh’s 22-year regime. Instead, GALA alleges that the opaque disposal process has eroded confidence, threatening the nation’s commitment to accountability. “These revelations are a pivotal test of our democratic ideals,” the petition states, urging public institutions to act decisively.

GALA’s demands are clear and multifaceted. First, they call for the immediate publication of unredacted records detailing all seized assets, including descriptions, final sale prices, buyer identities, and valuation methodologies. Second, the group seeks a comprehensive breakdown of how proceeds were allocated, including any commissions or consultant fees. Third, GALA proposes an independent oversight body, comprising National Assembly members, the National Audit Office, and civil society, to audit past transactions and monitor future disposals.

Additionally, GALA demands the withdrawal of former Justice Minister Abubacarr Ba Tambadou’s nomination to the International Criminal Court, citing concerns over his oversight of the process. Finally, they request a presidential address to outline a time-bound plan for accountability and institutional reform. The petition also urges the National Assembly to launch a formal inquiry and calls on citizens to remain vigilant in demanding justice.

This petition follows GALA’s recent clash with authorities, during which 27 activists were detained during an unauthorized protest. Released unconditionally after youth demonstrations, GALA remains steadfast, planning a press conference to outline the next steps. “Impunity will no longer find refuge in the New Gambia,” the petition declares, emphasizing the need for unified action to ensure public resources are not squandered.

As The Gambia grapples with these revelations, GALA’s petition underscores a broader call for transparency and a zero-tolerance stance on corruption, challenging the government to uphold its democratic promises.
