Gambian Foreign-Based Players – Weekend Roundup

It was another impressive weekend for Gambian players abroad, with goals and standout performances across different leagues.

  • Abdoulie Ceesay made it back-to-back games on the scoresheet, continuing his strong form.
  • Yankuba Minteh netted his third goal of the season in the Premier League.
  • Modou Saidy, Abdoulie Manneh, and Lamin Jarjou all got on the scoresheet for their respective clubs.
  • Muhammed Colley delivered a standout performance with a brace in the Primavera.
  • Pa Omar Babou stole the spotlight with a remarkable four-goal haul, joining the list of Gambians to score four times in a single match.

England

Brighton & Hove Albion kept their push for a top six finish firmly on track with a convincing 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the American Express Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts made a flying start, taking the lead after just 35 seconds through Jack Hinshelwood their fastest-ever goal in the Premier League. Moments later, captain Lewis Dunk doubled the advantage with a header, marking the first time Albion scored twice within the opening five minutes of a Premier League match.

The win was sealed late on when Yankuba Minteh fired home a powerful close-range finish with just minutes remaining.

It proved to be a perfect occasion for manager Fabian Hürzeler, who recently signed a new contract. With two matches left to play, Albion sit seventh and remain firmly in contention for European qualification, with fixtures against Leeds United and Manchester United still to come.

GERMANY

Ceesay comes on to replace Steve Mounié Hountondji in the 73rd minutes , who has delivered a strong performance this afternoon.

Despite a late goal from Ceesay, FC St. Pauli were unable to mount a comeback. They now face a crucial must-win encounter against relegation rivals VfL Wolfsburg next weekend.

Ceesay also created a key opportunity, cutting the ball back for Jackson Irvine, whose strike forced a save from Maarten Vandevoordt.

St. Pauli are now without a win in their last nine matches  the longest current winless streak in the Bundesliga.

Italy

Muhammed Colley continued his outstanding form, scoring a brace against Genoa Primavera to take his tally to 13 goals for the season nine of them coming at home. He has also contributed five assists.

ACF Fiorentina Primavera produced a dominant display, thrashing Cremonese Primavera 6–1 to move one point clear of Parma Primavera at the top of the table.

Sulayman Jallow also got on the scoresheet, netting his seventh goal of the campaign.

Czech Republic

Gibril Sosseh delivered an excellent all-round performance and registered a crucial assist for Bohemians Praha 1905 in their dramatic play-off encounter against SK Sigma Olomouc in the Czech First League.

Sosseh played the full 120 minutes and set up Bohemians’ second goal in the 61st minute, helping his side secure a 2–1 victory after extra time. However, despite the win on the night, Sigma Olomouc progressed with a 4–3 aggregate score.

Sweden

Mjällby AIF secured their third consecutive win with an impressive 4–1 away victory over Degerfors IF.

Manneh continued his fine form, taking his tally to four goal contributions in seven matches (2 goals, 2 assists). He scored in the 37th minute with a well-placed header.

Mjällby’s strong run of form keeps their momentum going as they push further up the table.

Modou Lamin Darboe made his first start for Hammarby TFF in their impressive 4–0 win over Assyriska FF in the Ettan Norra on Saturday.

LATIVA

Both Haruna Rashid Njie and Modou Saidy played the full 90 minutes, with Saidy completing back-to-back full matches in what was his 11th appearance of the season.

Deployed in a defensive midfield role, Saidy delivered an outstanding performance, scoring his first home goal and providing his second assist of the campaign.

RFS cruised to a commanding 5–0 victory over FK Liepāja in a dominant display.

Tunisia

Saidou Khan played a key role as Club Africain secured their 14th Tunisian Ligue 1 title with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over second-placed Espérance de Tunis on Sunday.

The crucial win opened up a five-point lead at the top with just one match remaining, confirming Club Africain as champions.

Saidou has been instrumental in midfield throughout the campaign, featuring in 22 league matches and helping drive the team to a record-breaking title triumph.

Tanzania

Lamin Jarjou maintained his impressive run of form, scoring and providing an assist for Singida Black Stars in their dominant 4–0 victory over Mtibwa Sugar in the Tanzanian Premier League on Saturday. The in-form attacker now has three goals for the club this season and has contributed to an outstanding 11 goals in all competitions so far.

Bangladesh

Fortis FC delivered a dominant attacking performance to thrash Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club 7–1 in the Football League at Shaheed Miraj-Tapan Stadium on Friday.

Gambian forward Pa Babou was the standout performer, netting a brilliant hat-trick, while Nigerian striker Onyekachi Okafor added two goals in the emphatic win.

Pa Babou opened the scoring in the 6th minute before Fakirerpool briefly responded through Ibrahim in the 19th minute. However, Fortis quickly reasserted control, with Babou striking twice more in the 42nd and 45+7th minutes to complete his hat-trick before halftime.

I started my journalism career as a football analyst in 2012 with Vibes FM and went on to work with CityLimit, West Coast, Hot FM, Freedom Radio, Eye Africa and Afri Radio as a content producer and presenter.
