Kanifing General Hospital has launched an investigation into a sexual assault allegation against one of its clinical staff members after an audio recording and related reports began circulating widely on social media.

In a statement dated 19 August 2026, the hospital’s Board and Management said they became aware of claims that a staff member sexually assaulted a woman during a consultation. The hospital emphasized that it takes such allegations “extremely seriously” and immediately opened an internal probe to establish the facts.

According to the woman’s account shared in the circulating audio published by What’sOnGambia online,  she visited Kanifing General Hospital last week seeking treatment for severe abdominal pain. A nurse examined her and diagnosed a urinary tract infection. During an internal examination, the nurse allegedly pressed on an area that caused intense pain. He then asked when she had last had sex. After she answered, the nurse claimed something inside her vagina was “hanging” and said he needed to insert something to fix it.

He allegedly asked whether she would be comfortable with him putting his penis inside her. She refused and requested medication to take home. The nurse reportedly insisted he was the only person who could perform the procedure and then asked if she would allow him to insert his penis just once and withdraw it immediately. While she was lying down, he allegedly exposed himself and attempted the act. She said she shouted and confronted him; he responded that he had “just put it in and pulled it out immediately.”

Hospital management stated that the staff member involved has been identified, summoned to a meeting with senior management, and placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Officials have also contacted the complainant and invited her to provide further information. The hospital pledged to handle the matter sensitively, objectively and in line with established procedures.

“Kanifing General Hospital does not condone sexual misconduct, abuse, harassment or any other form of unethical or unprofessional conduct by its staff,” the statement read. It stressed that patient safety, dignity and rights remain top priorities and that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with hospital policies, Civil Service regulations and applicable legal requirements if the allegations are substantiated.

The Hospital management urged the public to allow a fair and impartial investigation to proceed without prejudice to any party. All clinical and essential services at the hospital continue to operate normally, and the public is encouraged to seek care as needed.

The hospital assured the communities it serves that it will handle the matter with the seriousness, transparency, and professionalism it deserves.
