Prominent Senegalese opposition parliamentarian Guy Marius Sagna has sharply criticized President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for agreeing to receive former President Macky Sall, who is campaigning to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.

In a widely shared Facebook post, Sagna accused Faye of betraying the memory of victims who suffered during protests against Sall’s government. He referenced Faye’s own words from his April 2, 2024, swearing-in ceremony, where the president vowed never to disappoint those who sacrificed for Senegal’s democracy.

“I am reminded of the painful memory of the martyrs of Senegalese democracy, those who lost limbs, the wounded, and former prisoners. I will always keep in mind the heavy sacrifices made so that I may never disappoint you,’ Sagna quoted Faye as saying.

The lawmaker argued that granting Sall an audience on Friday, July 17, 2026, amounts to a betrayal. “You are doing more than just disappointing them; you are assassinating their memory for a third time,” Sagna wrote, directly linking Sall to the repression of peaceful demonstrators during his administration.

Sall announced his plans in a statement issued on July 14, 2026. The former president, who left office two years ago, said he would travel to Senegal as part of broader international consultations tied to his bid for the UN’s top job. “Due to a particularly busy international schedule, I will depart from Dakar immediately after my meeting with His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye,” Sall stated.

The meeting comes amid heightened political sensitivities in Senegal. Faye rose to power on a platform promising reform and accountability following years of tension under Sall, including deadly protests that left several people dead and many injured or imprisoned. Sagna, a vocal critic of the former regime, has positioned himself as a defender of those affected, repeatedly calling for justice for what he describes as state-orchestrated crackdowns.

The presidency has confirmed the meeting will take place as scheduled, framing it as a routine diplomatic engagement between a sitting head of state and his predecessor.

Sagna’s post has sparked intense debate online, with many users echoing his concerns about political reconciliation versus accountability. Others argue that diplomatic courtesy should not be sacrificed amid personal or political rivalries, especially as Senegal seeks to maintain stability on the global stage.

As Macky Sall pushes his UN candidacy, the optics of his return to Dakar and meeting with Faye are being closely watched both at home and abroad.
