The corpse of the Gambian man brutally shot and killed by Brazilian police in the city of São Paulo has been released to his family and friends amid plans to transport his body to the Gambia for burial.
Bubacarr Dukureh was killed during a deadly encounter with Brazilian police on Thursday, September 14, in the Latin American country.
The motive behind his killing is still unknown.
Police in Sao Paulo say’ he was armed,’ a claim vehemently dismissed by his Brazillian wife, family, and friends.
Edrisa Kuyateh, Secretary-General of the Gambian community in Brasil, told TAT,
“We now have access to the dead body and have prepared the deceased certificate; we are communicating with the company to take the corpse home. But, unfortunately, there is no direct flight to the Gambia, only to Senegal. So we will be communicating with the Senegalese consular here in Brazil to help us communicate with authorities if we need a declaration (clearance) at the airport.
We also spoke with the family, especially those in the Diaspora, for financial help since we cannot do it all alone.”
Dukureh’s death has sparked outrage among the Gambian community in Brazil, who called on the Gambia government to engage Brazilian authorities to investigate the shooting, establish the cause of his death, and bring his killers to justice.
