President Adama Barrow has unexpectedly changed the leadership of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, reassigning its director general, Bakary Gassama, to the foreign service and appointing Dawda Ceesay as his replacement.
Ceesay, a former teacher who lives in the United States, previously served as the agency’s administrative director.
Lamin Saidybaa, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency spokesperson, confirmed Gassama’s redeployment to the foreign service but did not provide further details. This move is seen as part of a larger strategic shift within the agency.
Gassama, a widely experienced anti-drug agency chief, was appointed by former President Jammeh in 2015 and then reinstated by the coalition government in 2017. His tenure ended with his redeployment to the foreign service.
