A horrific road traffic accident involving a Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) bus near Kalagi in the Foni district has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and multiple injuries, according to official police reports. The incident, which occurred earlier today, has sent shockwaves through local communities, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
The Gambia Police Force confirmed the tragedy in a statement released this afternoon. “The Police PRO has confirmed a road traffic accident involving a GTSC bus near Kalagi, with two confirmed dead and several others injured,” said ASP Modou Musa Sisawo, the Police Public Relations Officer.
Details on the cause remain under investigation, but preliminary accounts suggest the bus may have lost control, possibly due to mechanical issues or adverse road conditions following recent heavy rains.
Among the fatalities is Oumie L. Ceesay, a dedicated educator and co-opted executive member at Kudang Lower and Upper Basic School. Her sudden passing has devastated the school community, where she was known for her unwavering commitment to students and colleagues.
In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Kudang Lower and Upper Basic School expressed profound grief: We regret to announce the sudden death of our colleague, co-opted executive, Oumie L. Ceesay, in an accident today at Foni Kanlagi! May Allah forgive her shortcomings and make her among the people of Jannatul Firda’us. Ameen! So sad!”
Colleagues described Oumie as a pillar of support, often organizing educational initiatives and mentoring young learners. “She was more than a teacher; she was family to us all,” one staff member said of her.
This accident adds to a series of recent road mishaps in The Gambia, prompting calls from safety advocates for stricter vehicle maintenance and driver training protocols at GTSC. Police have urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws.
