The Gambia Football Federation has named Modou Jobe, widely known as Toldo, as the new goalkeepers coach for the Gambia U17 national team. The former national team star, who retired at the end of the 2024/2025 season, will lead the Baby Scorpions’ goalkeeping unit as they prepare for the upcoming WAFU A competition in Bamako.
Jobe, a seasoned goalkeeper with over 40 national caps and three domestic titles, brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious playing career. Having represented The Gambia in two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, Jobe also plied his trade across Africa, including stints in Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, and Rwanda, as well as Saudi Arabia. His extensive journey has equipped him with the expertise to mentor the next generation of Gambian shot-stoppers.
“I’m thrilled to handle the U17s,” Jobe said. “It’s one of the foundations. If you don’t master the basics of goalkeeping at that age—catching, diving, positioning, handling—it becomes difficult later. This is the most important stage for young keepers to build their fundamentals.”
Jobe’s transition to coaching has been deliberate. He began pursuing his coaching licenses during his playing career, earning his FIFA Grassroots License and CAF D License in Tanzania. Currently employed by Dynamo Abomey FC in Benin, Jobe is working toward his CAF C License, citing Benin’s coaching environment as ideal for his development. “Adaptation won’t be a problem,” he noted, explaining his choice to further his coaching education in Benin despite multiple offers.

The 37-year-old’s appointment came after productive discussions with the Gambia Football Federation. The U17 head coach, impressed by Jobe’s work ethic during his off-season training with Gambinos Academy, approached the veteran goalkeeper to join the national setup. Jobe praised the academy’s professionalism and facilities, which played a role in his preparation for this new chapter.
“With my experience playing across Africa and in Saudi Arabia, I can provide solid training and tips to elevate these young keepers,” Jobe said. “The U17 level is sensitive in their career development, and I’m ready to guide them to the next stage.”

Expressing his pride in serving his country, Jobe added, “Representing The Gambia as a footballer was an honor, and now being called to serve as a coach is equally humbling. It’s the highest privilege to contribute to my nation with respect and pride.”
As Jobe steps into his role, expectations are high that his expertise will shape a new era of goalkeeping talent for The Gambia, starting with the WAFU A tournament.
