Turkiye marked the 102nd anniversary of the proclamation of the Turkish Republic with a vibrant celebration in The Gambia, underscoring its commitment to deepening ties with the West African nation. The event, held at a grand gathering in Banjul, was led by the Turkiye Ambassador to The Gambia, Fahr Turker Oba, who emphasized Turkey’s role as a proactive and responsible actor in international affairs.
“Turkiye stands as a constructive contributor to resolving global challenges,” Turker told the audience. “Our bilateral relationship with The Gambia exemplifies a foreign policy rooted in mutual respect, solidarity, and shared values.” He highlighted Turkey’s pursuit of an effective, just, and inclusive international order under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, aimed at eliminating global injustices.

The proclamation of the Turkish Republic on October 29, 1923, was a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, and the celebration served as a moment of gratitude for those who founded and defended it. Turker noted that collaboration with The Gambia has flourished through high-level engagements, including productive meetings between their Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Energy in August and October 2025. “We enjoy strong cooperation in international forums, and we are working to strengthen relations through continued dialogue,” he added.
The Gambia has benefited significantly from Turkey’s support in various sectors, including security, defense, education, health, agriculture, and trade. The establishment of diplomatic ties has fostered a relationship grounded in mutual respect and shared goals. Both nations have consistently supported each other in multilateral frameworks, such as the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sering Modou Njie, echoed these sentiments, praising the enduring partnership. “Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, our two nations have nurtured a relationship anchored in mutual respect and solidarity,” Faye said. He highlighted the Joint Economic Commission, established in 2014, as a dynamic platform that has boosted trade and investment. Bilateral trade reached over $88 million in 2020, with prospects for further growth.

Njie also expressed gratitude for Turkey’s support in training Gambian diplomats serving at embassies worldwide, thereby enhancing The Gambia’s global diplomatic presence. Foreign Minister Njie reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Turkey, emphasizing the potential for new avenues of cooperation. “Together, we can address shared challenges and seize emerging opportunities for the mutual benefit of our people,” Njie said.
The celebration, attended by dignitaries, diplomats, and community leaders, was a testament to the strong bonds between Turkey and The Gambia. As both nations look to the future, their shared commitment to collaboration promises to drive progress in trade, security, and development, fostering prosperity for their peoples. The event concluded with cultural performances and expressions of optimism for the continued growth of this exemplary partnership.
