The Embassy of the Republic of The Gambia in Washington, D.C., has issued an urgent appeal to Gambians living in the United States, particularly students and visitors on temporary visas, urging them to strictly comply with U.S. immigration rules amid rising concerns about visa overstays.

In a strongly worded statement, the Embassy highlighted alarming statistics showing that the overstay rate for Gambian students has climbed to 38 percent. In comparison, 13 percent of those on B1/B2 visitor visas have remained in the country beyond their authorized period. Officials warned that such violations not only jeopardize individual futures but also damage The Gambia’s reputation as a whole.

“Overstaying a visa is a violation of United States immigration laws and carries significant consequences,” the statement read. Affected individuals risk visa cancellation, future ineligibility for U.S. entry, deportation, and long-term travel bans. More critically, high overstay figures have already triggered stricter visa scrutiny for all Gambian nationals, resulting in higher denial rates and reduced opportunities for genuine students and visitors.

The Embassy emphasized the broader implications for the Gambian diaspora and prospective travelers. Increased enforcement could limit educational and professional exchanges that many young Gambians rely on.

It called on nationals to strictly adhere to visa terms and depart before their expiration; check their I-94 records online to confirm departure dates; seek legal advice from U.S. immigration authorities for any extensions; and uphold the dignity and integrity of The Gambia through lawful conduct.

Community leaders, student associations, and diaspora groups have been tasked with intensifying awareness campaigns on immigration compliance.

The Gambian government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens abroad while promoting responsible engagement with host nations. “The cooperation of all Gambians is essential in addressing this trend and preserving opportunities for future generations,” the statement concluded.

The Embassy said it remains available to provide guidance and encouraged nationals to rely on official channels for updates.
