Eight Gambian players featured in UEFA competitions on Wednesday and Thursday, with six making their respective competition debuts. Ebrima Singhateh, Muhammed Badamoesi and Abdoulie Sanyang were handed starts, while Alasana Yirang, Mahmud Bajo and Saikou Touray  made their European debuts after coming off the bench.

Among the standout performers was Abdoulie Sanyang, popularly known as Bamba, who scored Hajduk Split’s first goal in the UEFA Conference League following the Croatian club’s return to European football after a 16-year absence.

Champions League

Sulieman Camara maintained his place in the starting lineup for Yaya Touré’s men, while Yirang was introduced in the 81st minute to make his Champions League debut.

Camara thought he had found the equaliser to make it 1-1, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The Spanish youngster described Wednesday’s defeat as a matter of bad luck and remains hopeful that his team can start collecting points in their subsequent fixtures.

Europa League

Ebrima Singhateh

Sparta Praha were denied victory at the Letná Stadium after Olsen scored a 90+1-minute equaliser, ending their hopes of extending a run of 425 minutes without conceding.

Ebrima Singhateh was handed his third consecutive start and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute, only for his effort to be saved by the goalkeeper.

Abubacarr Barry retained his place in the Salzburg starting lineup and impressed with his contributions in both defensive and attacking phases despite the heavy defeat.

The Gambian midfielder played the full 90 minutes and recorded the most touches (107) for Salzburg. He also registered the most accurate passes (87), the most passes into the final third (16) and won the most fouls (three) in the match.

Baboucarr Faal made his second Europa League appearance when he replaced Kabongo in the 64th minute as Viktoria Plzeň suffered a 2-1 defeat against Hungarian side Ferencváros.

Four minutes after coming on, Faal threatened the opposition goal, but his header drifted wide as Plzeň searched for a way back into the contest.

Conference League

Abdoulie Sanyang was the hero once again, scoring Hajduk Split’s first goal in the UEFA Conference League since their return to European competition after a 16-year absence.

The atmosphere among the Hajduk faithful was matched by the performance of Gonzalo García’s men, with Bamba breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute.

The move began with the hosts finding space in attack before Marin Šotiček set up Sanyang on the right wing. The Gambian forward finished past Ajax goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen to put Hajduk ahead.

Bamba delivered an impressive all-round performance before being substituted after 81 minutes. He recorded six dribbles, won 12 duels and completed four tackles, the fourth-highest tally in the match.

In Riga the hosts took the lead in the 12th minute through M’hand, and Badamoesi came close to doubling Riga’s advantage after winning a penalty in the 28th minute. However, his right-footed effort was saved by Anarbokov.

The Gambian forward had already threatened in the 21st minute, when his shot was blocked. Just before half-time, he again attempted to restore Riga’s advantage, but his effort on target went wide.

Despite his missed penalty, Badamoesi remained a lively presence in attack before making way in the second half.

KuPS extended their winless run to four matches in all competitions following a 4-2 defeat against Trabzonspor. Saikou Touray was introduced in the 74th minute, replacing Pasanen. The Gambian midfielder came close to finding the net in stoppage time, but his effort in the 94th minute went wide.

In Switzerland, Mahmud Bajo came off the bench to replace Kranjc as FK Crvena zvezda attempted to protect their advantage. However, Lugano scored twice in the final 10 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory, leaving Bajo and his teammates disappointed after surrendering their lead.

Assan Sanyang was an unused substitute for Bodø/Glimt in their 1-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile, Yankuba Minteh missed Brighton’s first European match against Kauno Žalgiris.
