The judiciary of The Gambia has announced the launching of a Coroner’s Inquest into the death of Mr. Dawda Fadera, former Gambian Ambassador to the United States of America following his sudden death in Banjul on Sunday.
The request to launch the inquest was demanded by the Attorney General following a letter he wrote to the Gambia’s chief Justice, Hassan B. Jallow.
“Following circumstances, which raised reasonable suspicion with regard to the cause of death of Dawda Fadera, the Honorable Attorney General acting under section 11 of the Coroners act Cap 7 laws of The Gambia, would like to request your lordship to order an inquest touching on the death of Dawda Fadera,” a letter signed by Hussein Thomasi, Solicitor General and Legal Secretary sent to the Chief Justice, seen by Alkamba times noted.
Meanwhile, the office of the Chief Justice acting on the letter has appointed Magistrate Sidi K Jobarteh to serve as Coroner in the Inquiry into the cause of Mr. Fadera’s death.
Mr. Dawda Fadera served as Ambassador to the United States for 3 years and 26 days. He was appointed on January 24, 2018 and died on February 20, 2022. With significant expertise in administration and civil service management, the reputable diplomat was one of the finest Gambia’s Ambassador’s.
Mr. Fadera started his career in the Civil Service as a teacher before being redeployed to the Personnel Management Office (PMO) where he rose through the ranks to become Permanent Secretary.
During his time as Permanent Secretary at PMO, Fadera led a massive transformation process restructuring the entire Public Service Commission of The Gambia to a merit based department – where appointments, promotions and dismissals are strictly based on the guiding principles of the Civil Service known as the General Orders (GOs). The undertaking breathed new life into the civil service and government administration, paving the way for an expanded and revitalised sector driven by expertise.
In July 2011, Fadera was dismissed by former dictator Yahya Jammeh and was reinstated in June 2012 after Jammeh found the PMO undergoing major difficulties in his brief absence.
He was indeed an excellent administrator.
Fadera was appointed as the Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service by  President Barrow in February 2017 was diving a major reform undertaking in the Civil Service before his appointment as Ambassador to US in 2018.
The seasoned and experienced diplomat kept up his impeccable work and diligence as Ambassador, strengthening trust and confidence in Banjul – Washington relations.
He brought the Embassy closer to Gambian communities across the US and led many community outreach programs where he engaged Gambians on the role of the Embassy and how issues affecting them can be addressed by his office.
He successfully worked on multiple projects that have significantly impacted young people and  ordinary Gambians.
A typical example is the $25 million Threshold Programme under the US Government Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)  moving to ensure that Gambia meets universal energy access by 2025.
