Lamin Jabang, the suspect accused of assaulting Momodou Sabally, presidential adviser to President Adama Barrow and deputy campaign manager of the National People’s Party (NPP), was arrested on late Tuesday, April 29, 2025, following an incident that occurred Tuesday evening in Brikama. The alleged assault took place during the launch of a UNDP-sponsored streetlights project, an event aimed at improving local infrastructure.
According to police sources, Jabang voluntarily reported to the Brikama Police Station on Tuesday evening after officers visited his residence earlier that day but could not apprehend him. He was detained overnight after providing a statement to the authorities, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
Sabally, a prominent figure in Gambian politics, issued a statement on Tuesday addressing the incident, describing it as a “brazen and unprovoked attack” by individuals he referred to as “UDP thugs.”
In his statement, Sabally noted that he had been preoccupied with coordinating two significant initiatives for President Barrow and the NPP, which he claimed would “change the political trajectory of this great country forever, inshaa Allah.” He did not provide further details about the assault or the initiatives but emphasized his focus on his official duties despite the incident.
The alleged assault has heightened tensions in Brikama, a key political hub, and raised concerns about political violence ahead of upcoming electoral activities. The United Democratic Party (UDP), which Sabally referenced in his statement, has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
Lamin Jabang, an employee of the Brikama Area Council, was transferred to Banjulinding Police Station just hours after his initial detention by Brikama police.
