Head coach Abdou Bowyer Njie has set his sights firmly on promotion as Colley Stars continue their impressive campaign in the Second Division.

Colley Stars have emerged as the standout team this season, suffering just one defeat while recording 11 wins and 6 draws in 18 matches. Their defensive solidity has been key, conceding only eight goals the best record in the league while opening up a five-point lead at the top of the table.

Strong Foundation for Promotion

After finishing fourth last season, Njie believes his side showed early signs that they could compete for promotion.

“We took important points from teams that eventually got promoted,” he said. “That gave me the belief that with the right push this season, we could aim for the First Division. This season, we believe we can reach the First Division,” he said. “That is the mentality driving the team.”

Now in his second season, the coach has built his squad around a clear objective—promotion. Many of his signings are players he has previously worked with, allowing for quicker adaptation to his tactical system.

Lessons Learned

Njie admits his first season at the club came with challenges, particularly adapting from the First Division to the more physical and direct nature of the Second Division.

“Tactically, I was outplayed at times early on. The league is very demanding, and teams rely heavily on intensity and direct football,” he explained. “But we adjusted, avoided defeats, and that helped us finish fourth.”

Rebuild and Response

The current campaign began with significant changes, as nearly 16 players departed the club. Despite the disruption, Njie rebuilt early and ensured the new squad aligned with his philosophy.

“It wasn’t easy, but we brought in players who understand the league. Now the whole team—players and staff—is aligned, and the environment is very positive,” he said.

Balanced Performance

Colley Stars have not only been defensively strong but also effective in attack, currently ranking second in goals scored behind Elite United.

“Our goals come from the work we do in training. Even when we concede, the team responds—we always push to get back into the game and go further,” Njie noted.

Key Signings Making Impact

New additions, including Modou Manneh and Edrissa Njie, Mustapha Conteh, Adama Jawo have strengthened the squad, with three recruits arriving from BST Galaxy and Gambia Dutch Lions.

“These players have raised the level in training and competition within the squad. Everyone is motivated and committed,” he added.

Tactical Flexibility

Njie has shown adaptability in his approach, switching between formations such as 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 depending on the opposition.

“We adjust based on the game. Our midfield is young and energetic, while our defense brings experience and stability,” he explained.

Cup Boost and Growing Confidence

A first-half strike from Modou Manneh in the 44th minute secured Colley Stars’ place in the round of 16 as they stunned league champions Real de Banjul—the fourth time an Abdou Bowyer Njie-led side has defeated the Whites.

“It’s always a contest between the big teams and the smaller sides. The smaller teams prepare extensively and approach these matches with high motivation, aiming to make a statement.

A victory like this brings great confidence to the players and lifts the atmosphere within the team. It is a result that can have a strong impact moving forward. If we maintain the same intensity we showed against Real de Banjul, we can achieve more positive results.

I have missed facing Real de Banjul, and hopefully in the future, I will have the opportunity to coach them.”

As the season progresses, Colley Stars appear well-positioned to turn that ambition into reality.
