In a remarkable display of generosity and community spirit, the Vision Development Foundation (VDF) distributed 4,080 bags of 10kg sugar to institutions and communities across The Gambia on Friday, March 7th. The heartfelt ceremony, held at VDF’s office in Churchill’s Town, saw recipients ranging from the Supreme Islamic Council and Gambia Market Union to local communities like Jambur, Sanyang, Dippa Kunda, Sukuta, Lamin, Kitty, Japineh, and Buima, among many others. As the Holy Month of Ramadan progresses, VDF’s annual tradition of supporting the nation’s underprivileged continues to expand, reaching from Banjul to Koina.
For years, VDF has upheld its commitment to easing the burdens Gambians face during Ramadan. Many work tirelessly to provide for their families while observing the fast during this time. What started as a modest initiative has become a cornerstone of VDF’s corporate social responsibility, delivering essential supplies like sugar to thousands annually.
Saikou Fofana, VDF’s Public Relations Officer, expressed pride in the program’s growing impact. “Our focus is on ensuring these donations reach the intended beneficiaries, especially the underprivileged,” he said. Fofana stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the distribution process, reflecting VDF’s dedication to meaningful philanthropy. He urged recipients to prioritize community needs and provide feedback to strengthen the initiative, fostering a culture of shared responsibility.
Among the recipients, Sheikh Essa Darboe, President of the Supreme Islamic Council, accepted 350 bags of sugar on behalf of his organization. He hailed the gesture as “rare,” lamenting that while many possess wealth, few share it with low-income people. “I urge others to follow Mr. Turo Darboe and his team’s example,” he said.
Sadina Kebbeh of the Gambia Market Union echoed this sentiment, calling for society to emulate VDF’s benevolence, particularly during Ramadan. Similarly, Boto Bojang, Councilor of Sanyang Ward, praised Mr. Darboe’s efforts and encouraged him to continue for the sake of Gambians and future generations.
Beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude for VDF’s support, emphasizing its tangible difference in their lives. The initiative’s broad reach included religious institutions, health centers, and vulnerable groups, showcasing VDF’s inclusive approach to addressing diverse societal needs and promoting unity.
As Ramadan advances, VDF’s sugar distribution stands as a beacon of hope and solidarity, inspiring others to contribute to the welfare of The Gambia’s less fortunate.
