In a powerful show of solidarity, Mariam B. Secka, Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has endorsed the recent statement by Party Leader and Secretary General, Hon. A.N.M. Ousainou Darboe, urging unity and discipline within the party as it prepares for the 2026 Presidential Elections. In a statement released on June 19, 2025, Secka reaffirmed the UDP’s commitment to its core values and called for members to rise above internal disagreements to focus on the party’s mission of transforming The Gambia.
Secka expressed unwavering support for Darboe’s timely message, describing it as a clarion call for unity at a pivotal moment for the UDP and the nation. “I stand shoulder to shoulder with Hon. Darboe in reaffirming the core values that have made UDP the most resilient, people-driven, and principled political movement in our country’s recent history,” she stated, emphasizing the party’s nearly three-decade legacy as a symbol of sacrifice, inclusivity, and democratic change.
Addressing recent internal tensions, Secka acknowledged that disagreements are a natural part of any vibrant political organization but cautioned against allowing them to foster division. “What unites us is far greater than what may temporarily separate us,” she said, echoing Darboe’s sentiments. She urged members to recommit to civility, discipline, and mutual respect, both in private and public interactions, to safeguard the party’s unity.
Secka also praised Darboe’s transparency regarding the UDP’s flag bearer selection process for the 2026 elections. She highlighted his willingness to subject himself to the party’s internal democratic processes as a testament to the strength of its structures. “No member is above these structures, and it is through them that we will determine our path forward, together,” she noted, underscoring the party’s commitment to fairness and inclusivity.
As The Gambia approaches a critical election year, Secka emphasized the UDP’s role as the nation’s best hope for honest leadership and inclusive progress. “The UDP is not a party of personalities; it is a party of purpose,” she declared, calling on members to close ranks and focus on the shared goal of liberating and transforming the country. She urged the party’s diverse and talented membership to present a united front to secure electoral victory and govern with integrity and competence.
Secka issued a rallying cry to UDP members and supporters across The Gambia and the diaspora. “Let us take this moment as a turning point, a moment to rise above personal interests and return our full focus to the higher goal,” she said. “May unity be our strength, democracy our guide, and justice our mission.”
