In a historic leadership shake-up at the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), President Adama Barrow has appointed Major General Ousman Gomez as the Acting Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), making him the youngest officer to assume the role in the country’s military history.
The appointment follows the immediate acceptance of Lieutenant General Mamat O. A. Cham’s resignation, amid mounting allegations of corruption, nepotism, and abuse of office.
Lt. Gen. Cham tendered his resignation in a letter dated Friday, citing the weight of the allegations as inconsistent with the high standards expected of the office. He expressed gratitude to President Barrow for the opportunity to serve and wished the armed forces continued success.
Cham, who had been promoted to Lieutenant General alongside Gomez’s elevation to Major General in recent years, had faced mounting public scrutiny over claims of corruption, abuse of power, and nepotism within the armed forces.
A Historic Rise for Major General Gomez
Major General Ousman Gomez’s elevation marks a significant milestone. Previously known as the country’s youngest Brigadier General upon his earlier promotion, Gomez now becomes the youngest to lead the GAF as Acting CDS.
A highly regarded legal and military professional, Gomez has built a distinguished career marked by merit, discipline, and academic excellence. He previously served as the Commander of the Gambia National Army; Deputy Chief of Defense Staff; Force Provost Marshal (Military Police Chief); and Legal Advisor to the CDS.
He holds a law degree from the University of The Gambia and dual master’s degrees, including one in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. He is a Rotary Peace Fellow and is called to the Gambian Bar.
Observers view his appointment as a bold step toward merit-based leadership and the restoration of public confidence in the military following the controversies surrounding his predecessor.
As Acting CDS, Major General Gomez is expected to prioritize restoring internal discipline and morale, addressing governance issues, and strengthening professional standards across the GAF.
His reputation for integrity and expertise in military law, human rights, and conflict resolution positions him well to guide the institution through this challenging period.
The Gambia Armed Forces have confirmed the leadership change. However, details of a full investigation into the allegations against Lt. Gen. Cham, or the timeline for a substantive appointment, remain pending.
Major General Ousman Gomez’s historic appointment signals a new chapter for the Gambia Armed Forces — one defined by youth, professionalism, and a renewed focus on transparency.
Colleagues and observers describe him as a professional, merit-driven officer with a reputation for integrity and a focus on discipline and conflict resolution—qualities seen as crucial at a time when the GAF seeks to restore public confidence.
The appointment has been welcomed by many as a positive step toward accountability and professionalism in the military. Some view Gomez’s elevation as a signal of merit-based leadership in contrast to the allegations that plagued his predecessor.
